Graveyard Cake

We've taken one of our most popular recipes and gave it a spooky makeover with gummy worms, candy pumpkins, marshmalllow ghosts and tombstones! Whether you like this cake scary or traditional, this cake packs a deep chocolate flavor. And what's even better? This one is mixed up in one bowl, without even busting out your mixer!! And, it's egg/dairy free, perfect for vegetarians or vegans!!

Ingredients

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon expresso powder (optional if you don't have, but it does add great chocolate flavor)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Tablespoon white vinegar (you could also use cider vinegar)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup cold water
DECORATIONS:
1-2 cups crushed chocolate sandwhich cookies (for graveyard "dirt")
gummy worms
marshamallow ghosts and tombstones (you can also use decorating icing and decorate cookies or sections of candy bars for "tombstones")
candy pumpkins
green colored sugar

Recipe Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, expresso powder (if using) and baking soda. Add in the vanilla, vinegar, and oil. Whisk to combine. Pour the cold water on top and mix until incorporated. Pour batter into your USA Pan 8" square cake pan. Bake for approximately 30 minutes until cake is set. Remove from oven to cooling rack. This cake tastes great even without frosting! If making the graveyard cake, once cake is cool, frost with your favorite chocolate frositng, or use our recipe. Once frosted, we scattered the cookie crumbs over the top. Then, we've added our "graveyard" decorations. The tombstones, ghosts, pumpkins and worms. Then, we scattered some green colored sugar around for grass. ENJOY!!
